Verre binding Cultural Festival

On Saturday, June 20, residents of azc Elderhoeve will open their doors to people from Arnhem and beyond for the fourth edition of the Verre binding Cultural Festival. Let us harvest what connects us. Welcome to the Garden of Life! Will you join us?

Harvesting what connects us

While refugees are often talked about at discussion tables and talk shows, the residents of Elderhoeve azc are opening their doors instead. They invite people from Arnhem and beyond to enjoy a day filled with music, dance, and workshops in the Garden of Life. A place to meet, listen to one another, and create new memories together. A special opportunity to harvest what connects us.

What can you expect?

Listen to inspiring stories, dance together to music, sample dishes from different cuisines, and take part in a variety of workshops. We do not close borders; instead, we welcome everyone with open arms to experience, connect, and discover. There will also be a continuous program of activities for children throughout the day. We hope to see you there!

Verre binding

The Verre binding Cultural Festival is organised by Bureau Ruimtekoers, COA, and Wintertuin, together with residents of Elderhoeve AZC and in collaboration with the Municipality of Arnhem. Through the Verre binding Cultural Agenda, the Municipality of Arnhem, Bureau Ruimtekoers, and Arnhem’s cultural partners work to promote participation through culture from day one.

Featuring five exceptionally explosive dancers, Ignite is a thrilling and award-winning theater experience that leaves you full of energy.

Energy is everything. Your muscles tensing, the air you breathe, the tingling sensation just above your skin. Tiny electric shocks shoot through your brain, screaming at your body to run. You can’t even help it anymore; the match is lit, there is no turning back. Standing still is impossible; everything is energy.

Shailesh Bahoran

Shailesh Bahoran is a Surinamese-Hindustani choreographer, dancer, and theater maker. With deep roots in hip-hop culture, he has specialized both as a solo artist and with his IRC in the street-born dance styles of popping and breaking.

About the performance: Farewell Future Welcome World

LeineRoebana & Black Pencil

After Ghost Track (2011) and LIGHT (2016) set audiences in the Netherlands, Europe, and Indonesia ablaze, dance and music company LeineRoebana presents the third part of their Indonesia trilogy in collaboration with music ensemble Black Pencil.

Farewell Future Welcome World is a unique dialogue between LeineRoebana and Indonesian artists who first collaborated fifteen years ago, building a long-lasting artistic and personal bond and now looking curiously toward the future together. The Dutch ensemble Black Pencil adds its adventurous spirit with a special lineup of recorder, pan flute, viola, accordion, and percussion. Farewell Future Welcome World weaves LeineRoebana’s dance art with the fibers of Indonesian classical and contemporary dance, the sounds of Black Pencil, the stirring soundscape of the Sundanese gamelan, and the ingenuity of composer Iwan Gunawan. The result is a fiery plea for the binding power of dance and music. An enchanting ritual to face a hardened world.

With House of Circus, Knot on Hands and Fenja Barteldres

A fresh look at circus, a genre that is constantly pushing the boundaries of what it can be.

The surprising circus program Great Catch presents a new generation of makers. The Circus Coalition has selected three short performances in which the boundaries of circus are explored with guts, originality and innovation. House of Circus brings an explosive mix of circus and drag, full of glitter and humor. Knot on Hands plays with the (im)possibilities of partner acrobatics and creates a hypnotic movement language in Brace for Impact. With a Cyrwheel without screws, Fenja Barteldres transforms the round ring into a completely new device.

All over the world, the recognizable sounds of klezmer can be heard, the compelling music that has always traveled with the Jewish people.

The world-renowned Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays the beautiful melodies that inspired the band members. And entirely in the spirit of the Klezmorim, the musicians of yesteryear who continued to renew the tradition with new repertoire, the band also lets you enjoy new work of their own.

In traditional pieces, original compositions and fascinating asides, the band once again proves that it has one foot in tradition, the other foot in the present, and both feet on the ground.

About the performance: Nederlands Blazers Ensemble

On November 25, 1975, Suriname became independent. With A Firi Fu Fri, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble musically reflects on ‘the feeling of freedom’. Inspiration, connection and freedom are paramount in a musical melting pot of styles that also includes Black Harmony and Denise Jannah. A typical NBE program in which extremes meet and that forms a resounding portrait of Suriname and its musical significance.

With Black Harmony, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble has invited one of the most exciting Afro-Surinamese groups. Founded in 2006, the company combines close harmony with rousing percussion and brings the musical spirit of Suriname to life. The Surinamese-Dutch jazz singer Denise Jannah is both a nice contract with and a perfect addition to this male group. Together with the horns, they make it one big party.

About the performance: BEYOND

Choreographer Piet Van Dycke works with six professional artists, each specialized in a different discipline (ladder climbing, acro dance, acrobike, partner acrobatics and (pole) dance). On stage, they turn out to be boundless bridge builders.

With ladders, varying in size and height, players build impressive structures, such as arch sculptures and rotating cranes. They balance the ladders into an exciting, wobbly playing field. They explore unknown heights, climb, float and venture into a daring choreography. Every centimeter and every second matters. They seek out the extremes and discover how far they can push each other.

Physical dependence has never been so exciting. BEYOND is about the vulnerability, absurdity, but also the power of our limits, and how we can push them by working together. Together we dance on the collective ladders of the human imagination.
