The film council from near and far invites you to The Old Oak

In his self-proclaimed final film, two-time Palme d’Or winner Ken Loach (I, Daniel Blake) brings one last warm tribute to the power of solidarity! This time between the residents of a mining village and a group of Syrian refugees.

In a dilapidated village in Northern England where the mines have closed and many people have left, a group of Syrian refugees is housed in the vacant homes. This meets with fierce resistance from the close-knit local community. Meanwhile, pub owner TJ Ballantyne, owner of the last remaining pub The Old Oak, tries to keep his head above water.

He takes young Syrian photographer Yara under his wing, and a special bond develops between the two. Together, they take the initiative to turn The Old Oak into a meeting place for the poorest in the community, regardless of their background.

Buddy to Buddy

Screened as part of the Arnhem ‘Buddy to Buddy’ project, which pairs refugees with fellow citizens. A discussion about the project will follow the screening.

The film council from near and far invites you to: The Perfect Candidate!

On October 29, we will go to the polls in the Netherlands for the parliamentary elections. The right to vote is a great thing, and now that our democracy is under pressure, it is more important than ever to use this right. That is why the film council has chosen The Perfect Candidate for Sunday 19 October: an inspiring story about perseverance, change and making your voice heard.

The Perfect Candidate (Arabic: المرشحة المثالية) is a 2019 Saudi film directed by Haifaa al-Mansour. The drama follows Maryam, a young and skilled doctor in a small clinic. Because the unpaved access road to the hospital hinders her patients, she unexpectedly decides to run for the city council.

But the bumpy road is not her only obstacle. Male patients refuse to be helped by her, her work offers few career opportunities and she still needs her father’s permission to travel.

Her decision sets in motion a process of acceptance and change among her family and in the community, who have never seen a woman on the ballot paper. The film shows how sexism affects everyday actions and how women’s freedom of movement is restricted.

A subtle but powerful portrait of how political change often starts with personal courage and how important it is that all voices are heard.

About the performance: Amsterdam Klezmer Band

All over the world, the recognizable sounds of klezmer can be heard, the compelling music that has always traveled with the Jewish people.

The world-renowned Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays the beautiful melodies that inspired the band members. And entirely in the spirit of the Klezmorim, the musicians of yesteryear who continued to renew the tradition with new repertoire, the band also lets you enjoy new work of their own.

In traditional pieces, original compositions and fascinating asides, the band once again proves that it has one foot in tradition, the other foot in the present, and both feet on the ground.

About the performance: Nederlands Blazers Ensemble

On November 25, 1975, Suriname became independent. With A Firi Fu Fri, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble musically reflects on ‘the feeling of freedom’. Inspiration, connection and freedom are paramount in a musical melting pot of styles that also includes Black Harmony and Denise Jannah. A typical NBE program in which extremes meet and that forms a resounding portrait of Suriname and its musical significance.

With Black Harmony, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble has invited one of the most exciting Afro-Surinamese groups. Founded in 2006, the company combines close harmony with rousing percussion and brings the musical spirit of Suriname to life. The Surinamese-Dutch jazz singer Denise Jannah is both a nice contract with and a perfect addition to this male group. Together with the horns, they make it one big party.

About the performance: BEYOND

Choreographer Piet Van Dycke works with six professional artists, each specialized in a different discipline (ladder climbing, acro dance, acrobike, partner acrobatics and (pole) dance). On stage, they turn out to be boundless bridge builders.

With ladders, varying in size and height, players build impressive structures, such as arch sculptures and rotating cranes. They balance the ladders into an exciting, wobbly playing field. They explore unknown heights, climb, float and venture into a daring choreography. Every centimeter and every second matters. They seek out the extremes and discover how far they can push each other.

Physical dependence has never been so exciting. BEYOND is about the vulnerability, absurdity, but also the power of our limits, and how we can push them by working together. Together we dance on the collective ladders of the human imagination.
